Joe Richard is a native of South Miami---but spent 30 years living on the Texas coast. While there, he fished and scuba dived out of every port in the Lone Star State, along with two neighboring ports in West Louisiana. During that period he fished a great many offshore tournaments, winning more kingfish events than any other Texas angler, until he returned to Florida in 1996.
Joe started the first monthly fishing column in a Texas high school way back in 1969, and continued that at Stephen F. Austin State University in East Texas, where he earned a Journalism degree. He began writing outdoor magazine articles with photos in 1978.
In Houston in the mid-80’s and early ‘90’s he was editor and main photographer for Tide fishing magazine. The publication won a great many awards from the Texas Outdoor Writers Association, including best magazine three years in a row. He also guided for two years off the Texas coast.
Back in Florida with a family to raise, Joe and his wife Amy worked for the University of Florida. He also guided on weekends with his 25-foot boat for five years out of Steinhatchee, on the Gulf of Mexico, a commute of 72 miles.
Currently he is also the FS book editor, publishing two new titles each year.
